This year has pretty much seen it’s proverbial butt.
It’s December 31st, 2016 and I’ve just spent the last few days with family and friends, away from the world, cut off from my phone, contemplating the year that has been.
Although many people will no doubt view 2016 as the worst year yet, I let go of that negative analogy quite a few years ago now. I realised that it’s not the events that happen in a year that makes it the best or worst year of our lives, it’s how WE react to the events, that makes them good or bad. So as I reflect on a year that has no doubt brought with it many ups and downs, and deaths and births, the only thing I will take from the past year are the powerful lessons and invaluable experiences that have richly endowed my existence.
Too many of us wait for the start of a new year to take a step towards the life we dream of living. We plot and plan and scheme to make changes from January 1st and we vow to make each year our best year yet. Sadly, what we don’t realise is that before Jan 1st, each and every day running up to that…is already an opportunity to start fresh.
Why on earth would you need a specific day in the future to pin the hopes of the rest of your life on?
It’s because we do that, that (like my dad would have said) the paw- paw hits the fan! We set ourselves up for failure right off the bat. We think that a set of “resolutions” will bring about the changes that we so desperately desire. That just because we vow to make a difference and a change, that it will happen. We believe that because we write these goals and plans down they will keep us going for the year. We believe that if we quit smoking cold turkey on that first magical day, we won’t feel the need to smoke ever again. We decide to never eat chocolate again and that because we decided it is magically going to happen?
Then we fail and we quit and we give up, never to try again. For a full 365 days. And then we start all over again….Sound familiar?
The key to changing aspects or areas of your life and existence comes down to making small incremental changes in your daily habits. It comes down to creating goals, connecting with your goals on an emotional level…and then growing and changing into the person you need to be to smash those goals!
This year, realise this 1 key thing.
What got you here…will not get you “there”.
That ideal life, that dream existence, lies in the secrets of your habits. In the small goals you set and the growth you continue to have daily. Your daily actions. All the small things you do that shapes your reality.
It’s about GROWTH.
Many people don’t realise that it’s not about the goals you set, it’s about the person you BECOME to achieve that goal.
